IELTS Writing Practice: 10-Step Preparation in Task 2 Writing

I. An Introduction to Essay Writing
As an IELTS candidate, you are asked to write a short essay of a minimum of 250 words in about 40 minutes. Usually, the essay asks you to discuss a subject of general interest. You have to present and justify an opinion about something, offer solutions to a problem, or speculate about future trends. Task 2 is 70% more than Task 1 which is 30%.

"My usual work table..."
II. Task Requirements
You are asked to write an academic-style essay on a single topic given. You may need to offer solutions to a problem, express an opinion, or comment on ideas or arguments presented. Your essay should be about four to five paragraphs in length, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

III. Preparation (about 2-3 minutes)
My advise is to spend 2-3 minutes working out exactly what you are going to do. Here are the steps you should consider:
1. Read and study the question carefully. Identify the IELTS statement and task. Note words and statements and ask yourself how you can relate to the given task.
2. Use the written language, NOT the spoken language. Use a wide range of structures as well.
3. Think in ENGLISH when writing. Do not translate word for word from your mother tongue into English. This is very useful when writing your Background Statement
4. Decide which points will be writing as topic sentences. Think about how they will be developed into paragraphs.
5. Develop a strong Thesis Statement in your introduction. Your Thesis Statement answers the task and dictates the flow of your essay.
6. Write your topic sentence in the beginning of your body paragraphs. This helps with identifying the main theme of the paragraphs.
7. Develop every paragraph in a convincing way. This may be done through use of examples, explanations, details, logical inferences, causes and effects, and/or comparisons and contrasts.
8. Ensure that your paragraphs are arranged in a logical order. Each of these contains an appropriate connective word to ensure a smooth transition between paragraphs.
9. Follow the "AREM" Method of organizing your paragraph.
10. Write a short conclusion (2-3 sentences) to ensure that you are not developing another topic.

As an emphasis, I always tell my students to not only write because for the mark but to also find joy in writing  - to express ideas, convey information, and convince the readers of one's opinion. In other words, I want them to find their purpose to write.
