Ocean Garden: Its Surfeit of Seafood

Meanwhile at the Ocean Garden...
Thought: I don't want to eat something that is found in the island.
Reality: I am eating crabs and scallops this time.
Thought: I have tried eating most of the seafood.
Reality: (Munching and holding some shrimp tempura) Yummy!

My thoughts betrayed me when we had our third stop for dinner at the Ocean Garden located in Bakilid, Mandaue City. Coined as "Surf and Turf", this restaurant serves as an oasis for seafood lovers and a haven for those who love steaks.
"A Garden of Palatable Food"
Admittedly, having stayed in the island for quite sometime exposes me to different kinds of seafood - crabs, clams, scallops, even sea urchins and blowfish. Yes! I have eaten almost all of them in a daily basis. The abundance of seafood in the island made me crave some thing more like chicken meat, pork and beef. Nonetheless, I knew that I have to take part of the Cebu Food Crawl so eating them must be a gastronomic delight and Ocean Garden did not fail to satisfy my craving.

A Garden Full of Seafood
  • Ocean Garden with their tagline, "One bite...you're hooked!" unarguably stands out with its name - a garden filled with seafood. From crabs to shrimps and squids, clams and scallops and up to different kinds of fish. Name them and Ocean Garden has something for you.

The shrimp tempura, calamari, chopsuey or mixed vegetables with scallops, and Spanish-style sardines (this one is also delicious) were the food that had me drooling for more.

Crabs in Chili Sauce was my personal favorite. The sauce was just the right mix of spices and of course, the chili flavor never empowered the overall taste. Milkfish with Gata (Coconut Milk)  or they call it "Sinanglay na Isda" has a superb unique taste. Ocean Garden's Sinanglay na Isda is a Bicolano-inspired dish where "bangus" or milkfish is stuffed with spices and wrapped with pechay or edible leaves.

Even if you are not a fan of seafood, you can flexibly comment that they prepare their seafood with uniquely Ocean Garden signature. Plus, if you are allergic with seafood, you can always opt for meat since they also serve Chicken Teriyaki and Pork Barbecue. By the way, a dessert was served, as well - Cinnamon Pudding was a real score!

Healthy Drinks, please!
  • Ocean Garden welcomed us with a healthy thirst quencher - lemon mint with cucumber juice. It was awesome! When we were done devouring those luscious food, they finished it up with a sour sop (guyabano) shake - this, too, is a must-try! This anti-oxidant fruit is very helpful to prevent cancer. This is also rich in Vitamin C and other nutrients. Another consolation was, the owner gave us a souvenir drink - Guyabano Concentrate! By the way, they also serve wine and some other drinks (alcohol and carbonated drinks/soda).

The Ambiance and the Set-up
  • It is not your usual restaurant setting. The place was still under improvement so we could expect that they are still expanding it. Yet, it can occupy groups of diners (just as we were). They have their seafood counter where you can choose which one you want them to prepare. The white wall is a calming scene and the shell decoration on a round-window is a stand-out. Generally, Ocean Garden is a promising seafood restaurant that one shouldn't miss on their gastronomic journey like ours - Cebu Food Crawl is a one-of-a-kind food tour/blogging experience. In addition, the price is reasonable enough.
    • Baked scallops - Php150.00
    • Calamares - Php175.00
    • Mixed Vegetables with Scallops - Php225.00
    • Spanish Sardines - Php150.00
    • Sinanglay na Isda - Php185.00
    • Pork Barbecue - Php50.00/stick
    • Cinnamon Pudding - Php50.00
    • Alimango (Crab) - Php170/100grams

Food presentation, indeed, is a crucial part of gastronomy. The science of cooking and eating invigorates our senses - the sense of smell tells us the aroma of food; the sense of sight conditions our mind and finally, the sense of taste finalizes whether or not the food is palatable, and edible. Ocean Garden made a wondrous combo - the presentation was an A; the aroma was excellent; and the taste, perfect! As an island girl, I should say that they presented each with a touch of their own.
