My Little Beast: Shukaku

I honestly felt so lazy writing today. I couldn't find any topic to blog. Well, I did draft about my sandboarding and bunjee jumping adventures but I don't think those articles are ready for publishing. So, I decided to talk about my newest adopted stray cat, Shukaku.

I had 13 cats in the boarding house I used to live. But after my project in Mandaue, I decided to have them adopted before I left. It was a month without the noisy meowing of kittens and cats not to mention feeding and taking care of them. There were instances when I felt I was "half" happy and alive without my cats but for some reasons, I had to let them go because my mom won't allow me to bring any pet at home.

So, I went back home and now living with my brother and mom but I felt something was totally missing. That is waking up in the morning while cuddling one cute kitten beside me and talking to her as if she were my baby. Of course, I never dared mention to my mom how I wanted to own just ONE cat because I knew how I would be rejected. But things happened unexpectedly...

Distribution at Pier 1

It was August 4, 2021 when I had a distribution of educational and hygiene kits in San Roque, Cebu City. Since I needed to buy some snacks for the children, I headed straight to the nearest convenient store and bought some goodies. On my way back to the barangay hall, I heard a series of "meows". I immediately recognized it as one hungry kitten. I searched for her and found one cute black-brown striped feline.

"This is how tiny Shukaku was when I found her."

Believe me, the temptation was so strong but I stopped it. I so wanted to take her home but I was hesitant for so many reasons. One, my mom, for sure, would disapprove it. Second, the kitten might have her owner. I walked pass her but she continued making sounds. She continued following me.

"After two weeks with me, she became part of the ornaments."
I looked back at her while on the verge of picking her up. It was even emphasized when the bystanders told me to adopt her because it was plainly a stray kitten - an abandoned one.

So, I brought her back to the session hall. The children were amazed that I brought a kitten with me. The cute little feline was all the more behaved yet playful except when the snacks were distributed that she also demanded one.

Shukaku and My Mom

When I brought her home that evening, I knew my life would change - better and worse. My mom was "angry" and even told me to look for someone who would adopt it. I strongly told her that I would be keeping her in with all responsibilities.

"Third week with me and she stills comes along during distribution."
Day by day, I listened to my mom's whining about the kitten but I saw her genuine concern towards my kitten. One day while Shukaku was outside playing, the rain dropped heavily that it literally soaked her. I was so dead worried that I called my brother to check if my cat was fine. Then, I received my mom's message, "She is safe and snuggling with her pillow."

"There are so many moments where she just surprises me!"

Little by little, she became part of my family. She has her share of food and treats.

I Spoiled Her

If I were to become a mother someday, maybe I would spoil my child because this is how I treated my cat, like a toddler. In fact, she knows how loved she is not only by my family but also with my neighbors. Maybe the entire block because she tends to visit some other nearby units and spend some hours before coming back home. There were even instances when our neighbors asked me if they could "borrow" her in a moment.

"Wednesday is commenting day and she knew I sometimes panic."

Anyway, it has been almost two months when I fostered Shukaku, and the amount of happiness that I felt when I have her is totally immeasurable.

"I melt."

This article might be too simple but love is manifested not only to our fellow humans but to all creatures in the world. I shared equal affection with these stray cats and even abandoned kittens. I couldn't imagine how some people become less affectionate to animals yet so full of themselves.

"Early morning, I was practicing Fur Elise by Beethoven but this Fur Baby needed some attention."

P.S: I once had a short argument with a boarder before when he commented that puspins shouldn't be inside a house because they are local and not nice cats. He reasoned out that only cats with breed are welcome in the house.

"If only this puspin can talk..."

  1. Miss Angel, you are such a kind person for adopting stray cats. You will not only make an ideal mother, but also a good friend. I am fortunate to know you and other members of the C3 team via your blogs and vlogs.

  2. cats are clingy...hehehe. I can understand the appeal of taking care of them but I'm not really a pet-person. Enjoy looking at their pictures or watching their antics on video though.

  3. I'm curious if you named your stray cat after a Naruto character... As far as I can remember, Shukaku is one of the tailed beasts. Hehe.

  6. When it comes to cats, I always remember what my manager said. That they're believed to wade off bad omen. And btw, Shukaku looks very adorable!
