Bislig Casts a Spell on Me

"Dalhin mo si Angel," my companion quoted what Dr. Diagan asked her to tell me. I was soaked at work last January of 2020 that the hospital staff thought I would be permanently assigned in the monitoring unit for good. So, when our hospital director noticed that I was already a regular face in the unit, and sometimes working more than 12 hours, he asked my colleague to come with them over the weekend. This is the point where I got my Bislig Excursion for FREE!

"Bewitching Tinuy-an Falls"
Half-Day Travel from General Santos City to Surigao del Sur

The hospital team who would be representing a medical convention gathered as early as 3 in the morning at the lobby. Since Dr. Diagan asked for my presence, I did not bother to sleep after my class instead I packed my things and waited for the hours when it was time to travel towards Bislig, Surigao del Sur. The cold air greeted me halfway the drive from General Santos City to Davao until I realized that we were already climbing up in a winding road towards the CARAGA region.

"Making every statement count..."
Deep in my heart, I was struggling to burst with excitement although they already knew how I looked at traveling in a personal perspective - fun, full of optimism, and adventure!

Enchanted River and Sibadan Floating Restaurant

Back then, I was only a spectator of the Enchanted River from my friends' social media posts. Even if I had the chance to travel from Cebu to Bislig before, I held my reins while thinking that someday, the universe will conspire my wish to step on my father's hometown. True enough, and even in the most unexpected circumstance, the universe truly led me to Surigao del Sur with full of surprises.

"Playing with my signature pose because I can't help but to fall in love with the view."

My fairy godmother must have known the purest intention of my heart that she made it sure to make my dreams come true by not only taking me to these places for free, but also opening my eyes from the reality that people will always be around in the least expected manner. Well, I drank the turquoise water of the Enchanted River while contemplating the opportunity handed on me in golden platter. Not only to mention a gorgeous lunch at Sibadan Floating Restaurant.

Emergency Team at Work

It was on the second day of our medical convention when Dr. Diagan had to rest, and tend his foot. He could barely walk without grimacing. His chronic foot pain shoot up that the group was alarmed. We asked him if he wanted to be transported at the hospital nearby, but he refused. Since we were checking-in at the separate place away from the rest of the other medical practitioners, he called up Arvin, the pharmacist, and instructed him to buy a syringe and a vial for him. After a while, he asked me to do the procedure. I was hesitant in a moment but I did not show it from my face, and even with my movements. Basically, I remained calm while listening with his instructions.

"Bislig is LOVE!"
As a nurse, I couldn't help but noticed the excruciating pain he underwent. As I did my assessment on his foot, I couldn't imagine such a powerful and strong doctor could experience this kind of pain. I couldn't imagine that I helped him the best way I can under his medical advise. It was another fulfilment that fed my soul - the capacity to help without reservations. On the next day, I saw Dr. Diagan walking again, and he went back to being a proud doctor. My consolation that day, we had the chance to tour around the quiet city of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.

My Takeaway from Bislig

My memories wander back to Bislig as of the time of writing. I could imagination even until now the privilege I had when I was in General Santos City. At the same time, I could always muster a smile while thinking of the road trip, the Curacha (crab soup mixed with other seafood), and the medical team who was always bound to help regardless of the occasion or situation. My greatest takeaway? The universe always conspires to help you with your heart's purest desire. Truly in Bislig, it cast a spell on me - compassion, admiration, and appreciation.
