Since mountaineering has been part of the Senior High School Curriculum, my role as an Academic Consultant switched to being a guide for over 100 students including teachers for the past 2 days.
"First day with the Grade 12 Beecher and Sir Rhoy"
My enthusiasm for the mountain and my love for my students was at its highest peak. I couldn't contain my excitement those Monday and Tuesday mornings.
"Free as a bird"
I woke up earlier than the usual and prepared necessary stuff not only for me but for my students' safety.
It wasn't easy when we started the climb. Some of my students were shocked about the long, gradual assault going up to the hills. It became even more exciting when we went down the steep slope towards the the waterfalls and had a great time watching some of them enjoying the water. The most challenging part was the steep assault until we went back to the jump-off point.
The best thing happened during our process reflection when I heard their responses and feelings about the climb. And thus, here are the three things I shared to them:
1. Nature is Beautiful and We are Stewards of God's Creation.
Whatever way you see it, nature is the most wonderful and most beautiful creation our Almighty bestowed to us. It gives us everything we need and in return, we need to protect her and preserve her the best way we can.
2. You are Your Own Responsibility but You are also a Companion to other Hiker.
Friendship built through hiking is a fortified fortress. Through your struggles going up in a difficult assault, a hiker friend will never leave you behind. Further, he/she encourages you to continue and finish the hike.
3. Store your Hiking Experience in Your Memory Bank.
Most of my students aired out that it was their first time to go hiking. My heart felt so gleeful that I said, "Let this experience be something that you will always look back. Make it part in your memory bank that somehow in your Senior High School years, you had that once experience where you could say that you were able to conquer your own fear and overall, conquered yourself.
Personally, this experience fueled my passion to climb more mountains and inspire more younger generation to remember those three things.
